We Become People in Architecture

Abstract

By means of the study of the Catalogo Breve of the 12th Mostra Internazionale di Architettura della Biennale di Venezia of 2010, People meet in Architecture, under the direction of Kazuyo Sejima, we are going to try to interpret its contents: the written work, the designs and photos. The Exhibition permitted visitors to become aware of various ideas deriving from different contexts based on the assumption that architecture, as space constructed for continually evolving life styles, has always been a mirror of the collective consciousness. By means of this work we will try and understand how the contents of the Exhibition, referred to with the use of the graphic essentiality of a catalogue, allow for the elaboration of “scientific accounts” by the reader, that is, the possibility of knowing and studying plans imbued with meaning rather than form. It is a reflection on how the search for a habitat, expressing ambitions for the future and its graphic representation, can delineate ideas and images representing the constructed reality and put forward considerations which become a ground for investment in the quality of new transformations. To glance through the Catalogue with the curiosity of the researcher is useful to find relationships with the disciplines of the design as the premisefor an indispensable dialogue. In particular, on page 91 of the Catalogue, the photo reproduces the Nuova sede degli uffici comunali Castelvetrano (Trapani) displayed in the Padiglione Italia, inside the Mostra Ailati, Riflessi dal futuro, directed by Luca Molinari. The proposed project provides for the reinforcement of the new public function, by the planning in the map of an ordinative element to fix the boundary of the existing construction with an open agricultural space, kept and set aside as a park: in this case as the realization of an important symbol in the struggle against the mafia (the ground was confiscated from Francesco Geraci, who owned it on behalf of Salvatore Riina). It is a process of planning which searches for and points out functions and uses for the spaces involved, in order to establish the connections which linkthe various parts through diaphragms suggested by the maximum attention given to man, nature and the quality of social life.
