Abstract

A petrographicandradiometricstudy,alongwithstatisticalmultivariateanalysisofvolcanicproductsofthe islandofLipari(Aeolianislands,Italy)wascarriedout.ThevolcanologicalhistoryofLipariwasreconstructed defining twostages(pre-andpost-erosivestages)furtheronsubdividedinfourvolcanicphases,eachofwhichcharacterizedbyproductswithaparticularchemicalcompositionandseparatedby stratigraphicunconformities.Thecorrelationsbetweenpetrographicfeatures,determinedbyX-rayfluorescence, andvolcanologicalhistoryoftheislandhighlightagradualdifferentiationwithyoungerrocksshowingamoreacidchemicalcompositionthantheolderones.Radiometricfeatures,andinparticularthecontentofprimordialradionuclides 238U, 232Th and 40K,havebeenmeasuredthroughgamma-rayspectrometrywithhyper-puregermaniumdetector.Thedifferentvolcaniclithologies,suchasbasalts,andesitesandrhyolites,havebeencharacterizedbypetrographicdiagrams.Thecalculateddoseratehasalsobeenusedasanadditionalclassificationparameter.Olderproductsshowlowalkalicontentthantheyoungerones.Thisisrelatedwiththeincreasingofincompatibleelements,suchasuraniumandthorium,intheyoungerproducts.Principalcomponentsandhierarchicalclusteringstatisticalanalyseshaveprovidedadditionalinfor-mation onsampledifferentiationandsimilarities.
