Abstract

The Sicilian songwriting is full of multilingual writing, to the dialect and into foreign languages. In this paper we will analyze the choices of four representative authors with different biographical and artistic paths. They have in common a strong propensity to multilingualism. Two of them (Carlo Muratori and Fratelli Mancuso) write mainly in Sicilian. They use Italian in "marked" contexts of use as a code language of emancipation; the authors who write mainly in Italian (Franco Battiato and Pippo Pollina)act contrary. The Sicilian is for them the language of childhood feelings expression. Different dynamics are at the basis of the use of foreign languages: it is due to personal experiences, or ideologies related to those languages, or needing music.
