Abstract

In their various and distinct ways, there are many European cities that have archaeological remnants buried in ground where the passing of time as left its sedimentary traces, and this renders urban archaeology a topic of a relevant interest, at the same time raising issues of great complexity. This specific consideration entails an awarenessof history and the wish to conserve these vestigesand communicate them, whilst assimilating the dynamic aspects typical of contemporary transformations. The articles collected together in this publication tackle the subject in its technological, structural, conservational, museological and museographical aspects. The examples provided include instances of re-interred or scarcely visible archaeological constructions as well as items conserved in the open air or protected by appropriate enclosures. Further examples have the archaeological construction today housed in an actual museum,or placed in contemporary edifices with the main function anything but that of conservation. This collection takes into consideration several European countries, dwelling over more recent or particularly significant interventions, in order to put together a wide range of case-histories; these are expounded critically for the benefit of architects, museographers and archaeologistsinvolved in the safeguarding and enhancement of archaeological remains in urban contexts. The authors have participated in a research-project of national interest, synthesizing or analyzing in depth results of studies that have been acknowledged in monographs, scientific conventions and doctoral theses.
