Abstract

This essay describes a phenomenology of the emotions, whose main purpose is to highlight their referential scope. Emotions enable us to comprehend individual aspects of the persons participating in our lifeworlds. This perspective challenges today’s dominant culture, where emotions are understood as mere self-expressions. Emotions as ways of knowing grow in awareness and acquire duration when they are sublimated into affections and sentiments. Seen as favourable reactions to meeting the other, they appear to us as forms of love and produce knowledge by dilection for the other’s inner world. A reflection on the emotions (particularly empathy) highlights their importance for the moral education to a correct sensibility.
