In the contemporary city the issue relating to urban cultural and environmental regeneration is approaching to several fields implying the construction of new urban models, like the smart cities. In the redevelopment of historic Mediterranean centres, talking about smart urban design, leads to the conscious overlapping of two realities: historic heritage and innovative technology. In this vision technology takes a different form, that is a virtual structure that becomes the prerogative of the smart city model. Energy issue and digital nervous systems integration play a significant role in the urban context, becoming the key of a smart vision. Mediterranean city is recognized as exchange and meeting place starting identity preservation processes through interventions of urban redevelopment, with cultural, economic and social outcomes. It is important to investigate aspects related to the form, memory and collective culture catching essence of place and dynamics that characterize them. The research aims to understand, in this kaleidoscopic context, if we can consider historic Mediterranean area as strengthening place of socio-cultural identity and centrepiece of a new urban design: the smart vision of the future city.
