Abstract

In the framework of an ESA program, a newarchitecture for plug&play compact antenna systems in the Xband has been investigated and experimentally verified bymany prototypes. The proposed antenna system takesinspiration from the LEGO building toys: the basic componentof the new architecture is a 2.7cm-cube complex module thatintegrates a three-dimensional local network and aprogrammable mechanism based on the bonding-wiretechnology to select one among three polarization options.Elemental blocks can be augmented by accessories to shape thebeam and may be used in array configuration over boardsprovided with cluster-level beamforming networks.Measurements have been performed for both standaloneconfigurations as well as when the devices are installed over asatellite mockup. The remarkable agreement with computersimulation demonstrates that the system performances may befully controlled by assessed design procedures, even in themost complex configurations.I
