N2 - In Sicily, as a part of what has been called the stone civilization, and among medieval stone masonry workshops in the Mediterranean, bricks and the building technique involving the use of an ‘artificial’ material led in the Modern Era to construction sites that broke away from tradition, creating an absolutely new one.The cases that are reported in this paper show how often the mobility of some ‘foreign’ masters was the explanation for the introduction, development and fortune of exposed brickwork, otherwise known as brick ‘curtain,’ in Modern Era Sicilian construction yards.
