Giuseppe Samonà in 1976, with full awareness of the condition of crisis that, even at that time was already structured in the agricultural work, introducing the concept of "city in the extension", he makes a re-reading, in an innovative way, of some of the utopian visions of the late nineteenth century. This particular concept of town-country today appears extremely interesting in future projection, and leads to the center of the reflection disciplinary those geographical areas (rural areas and small towns) which, until recent years, have been considered almost exclusively as places pending sprawl or, more simply, places to be abandoned. The hypothesis of "city in the extension" carries an explicit reference to specific identities, which must be identified and exploited to give to the campaign a truly active role: to this end it is essential to recognize the value of a priority field of action wider, getting closer to the more general themes of landscape and leading us to the identification of the specific conditions arising from work on a landscape very special as the one related to the portion of the Sicilian territory it covers our research. The intention of to plan the town and country as a unit, involves a search form that includes the forms of the orography, the spread of buildings in the campaign, but also the more recent forms of infrastructure. This research plays an important hermeneutic role in defining the difficult relationship between built and open space, in between construction and agriculture, highlighting how, even by following the idea of "city in the extension", must adopt as a priority the definition of a limit, of a border and of its significance.
