Abstract
Corticosteroid injection–related tissue atrophy mightcause permanent skin and soft tissue deformities1due to several factors, most importantly fibroblastinhibition and decreased Type I collagen synthesis.Correction of these deformities is challenging and ismostly based on volume replacement with lipofillingor other methods.Clinical observations and research have shown thatinjection of stabilized hyaluronic acid (HA) induces collagensynthesis, partially restoring dermal matrix components, and eventually producing a permanent effect.2–5Based on these data, we hypothesize that HA injectionsmight successfully treat atrophic tissue changescaused by corticosteroid injection. We describe a case of persistent buttock corticosteroidinjection–related skin and soft tissue atrophy treatedsuccessfully with repeated HA injections.
