THE WHITE STONE OF SOUTH-EASTERN SICILY: URBAN AND TERRITORIAL IDENTITY

Risultato della ricerca: Conference contribution

Abstract

Sicily is a region strongly "marked" by the massive use of the wide variety of stone materials that nature has offered: raw material with different petrographic quality, color, characteristics and with a wide range of applications both as a component and as ornamental stone. The "white stone" of Syracuse, the basalt of Etna, the "pietra forte" of Ragusa, the "pietra di Sabucina" of Caltanissetta and Niscemi, limestone and tuff rocks of Carini and Aspra, the grey limestone of "Billiemi stone", near Palermo and limestone tuff of Agrigento, characterise much of human settlements on the island, an expression of perfect harmony with the environment and of localist identity, today disappeared in many areas of our Planet. The activity that links man to stone in southeastern Sicily is ancient and the use of "white stone" lasted for a long time thanks to the industriousnessand capacities of local workers that made these places an extraordinary stage for the most significant events in the field of architecture.
