The paper aims at pointing out the development of earthquake-resistant buildings in Calabria between the eighteen eighties and the first years of the twentieth century. The study focuses on the construction techniques adopted in the post-earthquake reconstruction realized in a period just before the Messina and Reggio Calabria earthquake of 1908, after which there was a progressive affirmation of the reinforced concrete technology. In this time span a remarkable development of the studies in the field of anti-seismic construction occurred, with a prevailing revival of traditional building systems, and with the first experiments on reinforced concrete technology. The research uses a number of sources, with particular reference to regulations issued after the seismic disasters, reports written by contemporary authors to earthquakes, manuals and periodical publications. Particular attention is paid to some solutions applied in Calabria in the reconstruction following the 1905 earthquake.
