STRATEGIE PER LA RIQUALIFICAZIONE ENERGETICA DELL’EDILIZIA SCOLASTICA IN CLIMA MEDITERRANEO

Abstract

The Italian building stock is mainly composed of constructions from the second post-war period, when the economic speculation and urbanization have produced characteristics of poor architectural and energetic quality. By acting on the energy performance of existing buildings, adapting these characteristics to those required by regulations, on equal terms of comfort, represent an important strategy to the reduction of energy consumption and to the environmental protection. Through the application of innovative technologies and methodologies and the choice of appropriate investments, the energy retrofit can be now the main growth opportunity in the economic and environmental field, and an innovation opportunity in in the building’s. The paper presents the results of a research, developed at the Dipartimento di Architettura dell’Università degli Studi di Palermo, that aims to evaluate the energy performance of existing school buildings in the Mediterranean clime, through an energy improvement methodology, which may identify, case by case, cost effective solutions and interventions, according to the cost-benefit analysis. In this way it is possible to choose strategies for the energy efficiency improvement, assessing the energy saving opportunities and the payback period to amortize the investment. The field of investigation, concerns the considerable amount of school buildings that have been object in recent years of funding programs both at European and local level.
