The First World War is the epochal event that marks the beginning of the twentieth century. This volume aims to investigate the impact of the conflict on Sicily as part of a renewed line of research. One hundred years ago, in 1917, after Caporetto, a collection of letters and other texts by and on 23 Sicilian soldiers took shape, never published and presented here in a critical edition and accompanied by an introduction and an essay. The book gives an account of how the so-called patriotic bourgeoisie of the island lived and perceived the unprecedented and shocking war experience.
