Abstract

Hagiography is a powerful vehicle for propaganda and medieval hagiographic texts also provide a key to understanding the ethnicity and identity of Germanic peoples. As for the Germanic world, the cult of those saints who appear more closely linked to the political formations that are emerging in Western Europe is of particular importance. These are cults supported by the authorities not only ecclesiastical but also and above all civilians, by the sovereigns and their entourages. The cases examined concern saints whose veneration goes beyond the strict localism that often connotes medieval cults and are also linked to the veneration for the apostles and to the title - most eminent - of apostle conferred on a saint who promoted or carried out evangelization actions on large or small scale.
