N2 - Abstract. – OBJECTIVE: We developed a standardizedtechnique for ultrasound guided intra-articularinjection of the hip joint with the purpose ofextending routine intra-articular injection ofhyaluronans and steroids to the hip, as commonlyused in the knee. In this article we report the safetyof this technique in an extended series of patients.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were injectedsupine with an anterosuperior approachunder ultrasound guidance. The Us probe is appliedwith a target device for biopsy.RESULTS: The standardised technique wasused to inject 1906 patients with 4002 injectionsof hyaluronan products over a four-year period. The treatment was well tolerated with few, andexclusively local, side effects.CONCLUSIONS: The administration ofhyaluronans under ultrasound-guided intra-articularinjection is a safe technique for treatmentof rheumatic diseases of the hip.
