Abstract

Bursting at the end of 1892, the political and financial case of the Banca Romana remains one of the most memorable institutional scandals of all time. He brought to the surface the flaws of an entire ruling class, threatened to overwhelm characters of the caliber of Crispi and Giolitti, culminating in a swinging process between melodrama and farce, concluded by a surreal verdict. This book frames the European context in which the story takes place, it reconstructs the course drawing on historical sources, and proposes an analysis of the main works inspired by it, from those contiguous to the facts up to some present-day re-enactments.
