Abstract
Autonomy stands out among the principles founding the life of contemporary man. Born of modernity as an acknowledgement of subjectivity, autonomy has then taken on an undefined absolutisation character, tending to denature the deepest essence of personal being. The present paper proposes to accept the analysis of autonomy - and of the person - proposed by the thinker Romano Guardini, and to let the constitutive traits emerge from it, attempting to take them on as valuable directions of meaning for a current and necessary pedagogical redefinition of autonomy: an autonomy that respects the essence of the person, and therefore capable of posing itself in dialogue with otherness.
