N2 - In the first part, the essay reconstructs the complex historiographic elaboration of the concept of Modernity and its declination on the religious side, with particular reference, after the end of the confessional and ideological conflicts, to the new physiognomy assumed by the discussion on the controversial relationship between the churches and the modern age. Starting from the lessons of Weber, Prodi and the historiography of social discipline, the essay goes into the historiographical paths that have allowed the critical development of the discourse on the formation of modern states, on the processes of secularization and on the real consistency of the eighteenth-century caesura in recent decades. In the second part, he develops a reflection on holiness in Sicily in the long run and on the political-religious dynamics that led to the affirmation of the cult of Rosalia.
