The work presents a reliability analysis of astand-alone photovoltaic system for the supply of electricloads located in remote areas not easily reachable by the lowvoltage distribution network. The analysis is performed bycharacterizing the electric load behavior by means of aMontecarlo approach for taking into account the stochasticvariability of the electrical energy demand. A Montecarloapproach is used also for evaluating the electricityproduction of the stand alone photovoltaic system as afunction of the hourly solar irradiation of the installationsite. The variability both of the load and of the energyproduction are correlated and the probability that the loadcan remain unsupplied for a certain time can thus beevaluated. Finally the reliability of the stand-alone system iscompared with the reliability of an eventual connection tothe grid as a function of the length of the connection line.
