Abstract

Several researches and innovations concerning the building envelope aim to integrate the needs of mechanical stability and energy efficiency. It is considerably interesting to investigate this connection for historic masonry, owing to frequent difficulties in characterizing reliably both its mechanical and hygrothermal performances. The accurate description of these features requires detailed knowledge of local, traditional materials and construction techniques. Furthermore, in the mechanical as well as in the energy diagnosis, the needs of architectural conservation often limit the in-situ analyses to non-destructive tests. This paper examines the possibilities to improve the hygrothermal characterization of historic wall structures through qualitative methods well-established in the mechanical analysis, notably in the evaluation of the Masonry Quality Index. The purpose is developing a collection of data specific to traditional masonry, in order to support the energy diagnosis and the hygrothermal modelling of historic buildings. Since the variety of traditional materials and construction techniques is significant, the method proposed in this paper is applied to the architectural heritage of Sicily. Focusing on historic centres selected for the richness of their construction features, this study combines laboratory tests, qualitative analyses and in-situ measurements on the mechanical and thermal characteristics of historic wall structures and materials.
