Abstract

Studies about reusing waste materials inarchitecture have produced in recent timesunexpected and very original results. Anyway, this is still an unexplored field, that could beprosperous in certain geographical contextsand economic conditions or limited to fewexperiences of experimentation in others. Inboth these contexts, the limits for the spread ofbuilding systems that reuses waste productsare basically two: the first one belongs to thecultural sphere, the tradition and the difficultyof accepting ways of building and livingradically alternative (unless they’re not limitedto academic experiences, temporary uses, or inany case, when they don’t interfere withtraditional living); the second one includes theabsence of specific regulations and the need forcertification of building components. It followsthat structures built with waste will be verydifferent, depending on the environmentinclination to experimenting in this field.Temporary shelters, pavilions, installations, experimental prototypes, street furniture andequipment for parks are common exampleswich testify the success of the reuse of wastealmost everywhere, but just in few cases andfew countries it is possible to see examples ofefficient waste architetture (not temporary),such as residences, offices, restaurants, placesof workship, sometimes built simply addingnatural materials, typical of the geographicalcontext (like earth, straw, bamboo), to waste. And since building, among the industrialactivities, is the first for environmental impact, consumption of resources and territory, pollution and waste generation, it is also ourtask and our responsability, as architects, totake, where possible, new ways of investigationand experimentation on the theme of reuse. The contribution analyzes the differentapproaches to this theme and the resultingcurrents of reuse in architecture, distinguishedin: reuse for emergency, reuse for ecologicalsensitivity, reuse for creativity.
