Photocurrent Spectroscopy (PCS) is here presented as non-destructive technique, useful for the study of electronic properties of passive films grown on metals and metallic alloys. In this work, we carried out a characterization by means of PCS of passive films grown on different stainless steels (AISI 304L, AISI 316L and Duplex 2507) by immersion in 0.25 M NaOH solution at 82 degrees C, a condition that simulates aggressive environment of cleaning operations typical of food and beverage industry. In the case of 304L and 316L steels, band gap values notably change after the immersion, with an enrichment in Fe of passive films during the treatment. In the case of Duplex steel, passive film is still rich in Cr, even after the treatment in NaOH solution.
