Between the second half of the nineteenth century. and the beginning of the twentieth century. in Europe we are witnessing the gradual destruction of the defensive systems of the city, because, now, considered unnecessary bulk by the reasons they had originated.Of the fortifications of the city, only some elements were preserved, as, for example, the city gates and some towers. In particular the city of Rhodes, Greece, until the arrival of the Italian occupiers in 1912, had a fortification system consisting of walls, bastions, ditches and embankments. The latter, after more than two hundred years, from the conquest of the state of the Knights of Rhodes, had been used as Israelis and Muslim cemeteries. With the occupation of the Italian soldiers of the Aegean islands and Rhodes, it began also action for the protection and restoration of the diverse testimonies. This paper investigates the system of fortifications of the city of Rhodes, saved, almost in its entirety from certain destruction, even to the archaeologist A. Maiuri, in the course of its activities Superintendent of Rhodes (1914-1924). Rhodes is a good example of protection and conservation, beginning of the twentieth century, a whole historical center.
