Abstract
The essay traces the changes that radically redesigned the face and internal hierarchies of the Sicilian nobility in the centuries of the modern age. Marriage and buying and selling were the most important agents of spare parts in the sixteenth century, while in the seventeenth century the sale of securities and jurisdictions redefined the mapping of the Sicilian nobility at all levels of the hierarchy, in a context in which the honor market contributed little to the change taking place in Sicilian society, guaranteeing social promotion and redistribution of wealth from below. The essay examines some emblematic cases, showing the intertwining of finance and speculation, politics and business at the basis of many personal fortunes, and crosses the theme of the relationship between old and new nobility (legitimacy, loyalty).
