Abstract
A hybridatmosphericpressureandaerosol-assistedchemicalvapourdepositionstrategyispresentedasa facileroutefortheproductionofvanadiumdioxidenano-compositethinfilms.Theeffectoftheinclusionofgoldnanoparticlesandtheuseofasurfactantmolecule,tetraoctylammoniumbromide,isdiscussed.Thefilmswerefullycharacterisedusingawidevarietyoftechniques,includingscanningelectronmicroscopy,X-raydiffraction,X-rayphotoelectronspectroscopyandUV/vis/NIRspectroscopy.It isshownthatmicro-structuralchangesbroughtaboutbycarefulcontroloffilmgrowthconditions,and/ortheuseofsurfactant,leadtoanenhancementofthermochromicproperties.Goldnanoparticleincorporationleadstoasignificantchangeinthecolourofthefilmsfromayellow-browncolourtoavarietyofgreensandbluesdependingonthegoldnanoparticleconcentration.Thefilmsbecomemorereflectiveintheinfra-redwithincreasedgoldnanoparticleincorporation.Opticaldataareusedinenergy modellingstudiestoelucidatethefilmpotentialasanenergy-savingcoatinginarchitecturalglazing.Theenergymodellingresultssuggestthatforwarmerclimatesthethermochromicnano-compositesinvestigatedhereleadtosignificantenergysavingswhencomparedwithplainglassandother standardindustryproducts.
