Abstract

MonteCarlonumericalcalculationsoftheresponseofalanineandammoniumtartrateESR(electronspin resonance)dosimetersexposedtoneutronfieldswithdifferentenergyspectraarereported.Resultshavebeenobtainedforvariousgadoliniumconcentrationsinsidethedosimeters.Furthermore,inorderto simulatethein-phantomresponsewehavecarriedoutcalculationsbyvaryingthedepthofthedosimeter.Wehavefoundthatalargeenhancementisobtainedforthermalneutrons,becauseofthevery highcapturecrosssectionofgadoliniumtothermalneutrons.Agoodenhancementwasobtainedfor epithermalneutrons,whereasthesensitivityimprovementinthecaseoffastneutronirradiationispoor.Furthermore,thesimulationscarriedoutbyvaryingthedepthsuggeststhatanappreciablesensitivitytothermalandepithermalneutronscouldbeobservedforin-phantommeasurementsinthe2–3cmdepthrange.Theseresultscanprovideusefulinsightforfutureexperimentswithepithermalneutronbeams(suchasthoseusedinneutroncapturetherapy)andforfutureapplicationsinneutroncapturetherapydosimetry.
