Abstract
The theorization on Machiavelli caused a violent reaction in the institutional Church and the Catholic political theorists. As regards the latter, however, it is necessary to distinguish between those who – such as Luigi Sturzo a priest politically involved – refer to Machiavelli and his thought with deep sense of history and comprehension and those who - such as Jacques Maritain, more confessional than Sturzo in solving the political problem - condemn and judge severely Machiavelli’s theory.
