The Pipes and the Bears, the Poem and the Miracles : Inflections of the Literary-Pictorial Device in Buzzati’s Double Works. In his double works, Buzzati imitates genres which do not belong exclusively to the literary tradition, especially to the so-called high-brow tradition. The Pipes and the Bears, the Poem and the Miracles are ironic and deforming re-writings of diverse genres, such as the treatise, the fable, comic strips, emblems and votive painting. In addition, Buzzati works with mixed genres, compositions of painting and writing, in which the predominance and preference of an art on the other is hard to distinguish. The two pairs of works, at the beginning and the end of Buzzati’s artistic career, outline the development of the literary-pictorial device, inflecting a rhetoric dispositio which Buzzati has always taken into account in the exercise of his double talent.
