Abstract
First performed in the Basilica of St. Mark on 13th September 1956, Stravinky’s Choral Variations on the Christmas Carol “Vom Himmel hoch...” (1955-56) are an original and creative reinvention of the Canonische Veränderungen BWV 796 by J.S. Bach, which has a deep relationship with the architectural structure and the symbols of the Basilica, and also – but more secretly – with the Magic square SATOR / AREPO / TENET / OPERA / ROTAS and with the music of Anton Webern.
