Abstract
European regional policies have offered new spaces to promote action at sub-national levels of government, as well as the possibility of experimenting with new strategies for territorial development. In this paper we take into consideration the European Union macro-regional strategy to identify opportunities and critical aspects of the experiences already matured (Baltic, Danube, Adriatic and Ionian, and Alpine macro-regions), with a focus on the possibility to set up a Western Mediterranean macro-region. Some reflections and critical issues are proposed in the final part of the work.
