Abstract
From a corpus of French monolingual dictionaries published between 1606 and 1704, this article proposes to extract the idea of Sicily from the entries devoted to it. This article also seeks to show that certain stereotypes concerning Sicily are already firmly established in the seventeenth century and that this geographical territory is thought mainly through the use of mythology and the Greek-Latin cultural heritage.
