Design, construction and transformations: the historyof a work of architecture has many lives. Newgenerations, and different needs and uses change theinitial assumptions and conditions. The Steri, thepalace of the Chiaramonte family in Palermo, hascrossed the centuries. The essay provides an account of thegenesis and beginning of a process spanning from thefourteenth to the sixteenth century that is still inprogress and which represents the lesser known anddocumented period of an imposing building in theheart of a great Mediterranean city.
