Is Rohmer's cinema a literary cinema? Before becoming a director Maurice Schérer (who has not yet adopted the pseudonym under which he is known by all cinephiles) was a writer. And in the first of the three great cycles in which most of his work is placed - the Moral Tales - he took up and adapted his short stories from many years earlier. The literariness of moral tales is above all linked to a very sustained use of the voiceover. The abandonment of this narrative mode will be the most evident aspect of a progressive detachment from literature: his vocation as a narrator will find a completely different dimension in cinema.
