The discovery of the future is a manifesto of futurology, a young, modern and technological push, daughter of the science of its time, towards a methodical and analytical definition of a field of study as uncertain as it is fascinating: the future. It is also evident of Wells's scientific side, or rather of his desire to emancipate himself from the simple definition of a science fiction writer to gain access to the fame of a scientist, highly coveted by most of the writers of his time, from Jules Verne to Emilio Salgari, from Edgar Allan Poe to Thomas H. Huxley and Arthur Conan Doyle. For Wells it is not a question of rehabilitating the figure of fortune-tellers, far from it, but of establishing a well-defined field of analysis that makes all the more sense in his present precisely because it is accelerated, "kinetic", made up of scientific discoveries and technological artifacts that they are bringing unprecedented social and economic acceleration to the century of the industrial revolution.
