The present paper contains some considerations of a methodological nature, derived from the reflection on those empirical researches, which have been carried out in the last forty years in Italian schools, with a double connotation: on the one hand, the equal collaboration between a researcher and in service teachers and, on the other hand, the explicit intent to improve some professional skills of the teachers, with the consequent implementation of didactic innovations in the school. The procedure of action research with project (RAP) is justified, which seeks to reconcile the need for a rigorous scientific research and the flexibility imposed on research plans by the variability of school contexts. It is shown that RAP can bridge the gap between research and teaching action and can also give continuity to the educational innovations introduced in the school.
