Abstract

In the 1780s the Bourbon government enacted several measures in Sicilyimpacting the large family estates in the kingdom. Their purpose was to encouragethe formation of smaller properties and the development of the island’s real wealth:agriculture. One of the most important initiatives of the viceroy Caracciolo aimedat limiting feudal constraints and the set of oppressive legal prohibitions imposedaccording to custom by barons, which in the eighteenth century constituted asurviving form of ancient serfdom. Starting with laws regulating the exercise ofbaronial power, a harsh attack on feudal power in the countryside began, and itgave rise to a debate in which baronial propaganda was quite active. A processof seamless transformation had begun, and the Constitution of 1812 representedboth the fusion of and the compromise between old and new.
