Their purpose was to encouragethe formation of smaller properties and the development of the island’s real wealth:agriculture. One of the most important initiatives of the viceroy Caracciolo aimedat limiting feudal constraints and the set of oppressive legal prohibitions imposedaccording to custom by barons, which in the eighteenth century constituted asurviving form of ancient serfdom.
