Abstract

The historical centers often make readable a close connection between the parts and the whole, between individual architecture and the whole urban organism, so that the spatial relationships that govern the individual elements are found in the same configuration of the city: in the organization of open places and the same distribution system of housing units, everything is regulated by the structured morphology of the urban landscape. The project, then, requires a capacity to read system and relations, considering that even a fragment has the power to reveal the constitutive reasons of a more complex spatial system. The project of the new finds its reasons in the understanding of the system, taking as fundamental operation in the reading of what exists, to then continue what must exist; some interventions in small towns of Sicily describe this attention which proceeds by understanding the spatial meanings and the linguistic values of existing spaces, the interference with current living needs and contemporary design issues, looking for a balance between conservation and transformation, between new and old.
