Abstract

Escrivá was not a pedagogist but an educator, he did not write a treatise on pedagogy, but during his lifetime (1902-1975) he has educated hundreds of thousands of people of all ages and conditions. From the writings and works of St. Josemaria Escrivá, founder of Opus Dei (a hierarchical institution of the Catholic Church, which aims to spread a deep awareness of the universal call to holiness and the sanctifying value of ordinary work), one can get some inspiring canons of the educational and training praxis, actually a veritable "implicit pedagogy". Escrivá’s anthropological reference is rooted in the consideration that every man is the son of God; he is made in His own image and likeness as a unique and unrepeatable being, with a specific male or female dimension in view of the collaboration between the two sexes which complement each other. According to Escrivá the form of education is moral freedom, with the corresponding responsibility for the actions consciously undertaken. Escrivá’s first recommendation to educators is that of trusting the people to be educated and creating a context of friendly atmosphere and friendly circumstances where to educate them. The collaboration between parents and teachers, collegiality in pedagogical decisions, the establishment of a real educational community are three basic constants that are found in all educational institutions promoted by Escrivá. The main natural virtues that Escriva taught to practice are: sincerity, loyalty, trust, friendship, sensitivity in relationships, optimism, fortitude, appreciation for well accomplished work and religiosity.
