The paper is about the gaozhong, high school, as seen in the Chinese school system. The 20th century in China is characterized by a succession of epochal transformations that have changed thecountry over time. In particular, after the conclusion of the long and contradictory decade of the CulturalRevolution (1966-1976), which had led to the closure of secondary schools of all grades and universitieswith the subsequent dispersion of students in rural areas, it was necessary to rebuild the school system in itsentirety. In fact, the schools were no longer viable, many professors had been subjected to criticism and thestudents had been abandoned to themselves. The reconstruction of the school system has highlightedproblems of various kinds which, even in this part of the 21st century, have required new corrective actions. In particular, as regards the high school, which lasts only 3 years in China and is attended by pupils agedbetween 15 and 18, efforts are being made to give it a dimension closer to the development of studentpersonality, also through a professionalizing path of the teachers.
