The essay investigates the symbolic function of the theme of death in Sicilian novels, I vecchi e i giovani of Pirandello and Il Gattopardo of Tomasi di Lampedusa. Death, infact, is not only a recurring theme of these works; it becomes a symbolic figuration of the end of a era, of a world and of all the material objects that embody its emblem. It is a figure of the escape from time and history, a will to remain in the fictitious space of memories, a way to give back to literature the task that is its own, that of reviving the removed, the unheard-of, the repressed.
