Abstract

In this paper we presented data obtained during 1-year trapping of the Red Palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Olivier), in the town of Marsala (TP) with traps baited with pheromone and allomones. In total, 47 traps were placed at the density of about 1 trap/200 m. Traps were baited with the aggregation pheromone (ferrorule), ethyl acetate (10 % /H2O) and molasses (10 % /H2O), and were inspected weekly from April 2008 to April 2009. Twenty-one traps were placed along the city coast; and twenty-six in the city center. In total, 4010 adults of RPW were captured with the sex ratio female biased (1:2.1). Traps in the city center caught about 10 times more than traps located along the city coast. City center catches clearly evidenced two population picks, in April and in October, with about 5 and 4 adults/trap/week, respectively. Laboratory dissections showed that over 80% of RPW females caught resulted fertilized with the ovarian eggs fully developed and ready to be laid. Based on these results, the application of mass trapping as an effective component for Integrated Pest Management of RPW populations in urban environments is discussed
