Abstract
The volume traces the secular history (from the Middle Ages to the XXth century) of a stratified building of the Sicily: the Catania Cathedral. The Norman cathedral and the earthquake of 1169; the works of the late Gothic and of the Renaissance; the role of the bishops "builders" after the Counter-Reformation; the earthquake of 1693 and the reconstruction; the debate on the new facade designed by Giovan Battista Vaccarini; the completions of the 19th century: the dome and bell tower; the excavations and restorations of 1957 are the arguments that this research has investigated. A short paragraph about the history of the city of Catania and its most significant buildings built before and after the earthquake of 1693 introduced the subject.
