Abstract

The elasto-mechanical behavior of a rubber V-belt inthe neighborhood of the seating and unseating regions ofthe pulley is affected by the transverse belt compliance,which produces a gradual radial penetration into thegroove and by the shear-flexural deformation, whicharches the belt line along the free strand away from theideal straight path. These effects are always analyzedseparately in the literature, but are in close correlationwith each other. This lecture describes the matchingbetween the free strand and the wrap region, showing aremarkable reduction of the belt arching and of the contactlosses, with respect to the conventional theory.
