The teaching and research experience presented in the essay starts from the activation of a graduation laboratory in Architectural Design directed by prof. Palazzotto and developed within the Architecture degree course of the homonymous Department at the University of Palermo. The workshop has seen the participation of 11 undergraduates, who edited their thesis in the years between 2013 and 2015.The graduation laboratory, taking up the idea of "city-countryside" advanced by Giuseppe Samonà in 1976 - which brings with it an explicit reference to specific formal and spatial identities intended to give the campaign ambit a truly active role - has tried to identify and solve (through the experience of the project) well-defined nodes and threshold areas, between urban and rural, between villages and the coast, in their position as unfinished places and waiting for identity and specific functions. The research, in order to pursue its initial objectives, has thus accepted to interpret some possibilities of the difficult relationship between open and cultivated space, between construction and agriculture, between inhabited spaces and landscape, highlighting how, also following the idea of "City in extension ", today's design challenge can find interesting convergences and solutions in placing as a priority the configuration of a limit, a boundary (always understood as a threshold-space, a place of relations) meaning, or its most appropriate meanings in comparison with the complex contextual conditions with which today any project activity is required to compare.
