Il verbo vuliri in siciliano antico tra volizione e modalità

Risultato della ricerca: Article

Abstract

The contribution proposes a map of the functions of vuliri ‘to want’ in ancient Sicilian, with an analysis of the semantic shifts from volition to various sectors of modality as well as to pragmatic-discursive functions. The database on which the research is based is Artesia (Archivio Testuale del Siciliano Antico), which includes texts of 14th-16th centuries. The analysis of vuliri in ancient Sicilian provides useful indications to understand the meanings of this verb in contemporary Sicilian, and at the same time it allows to assess the consistency of this variety in the Italo-romance scenario. Grounding on a functionalist theoretical framework, the analysis accounts for the lexical semantics of ‘desire, will’, the path leading from volition to deontic modality and directivity and, finally, some emergent pragmatic-discursive meanings in which vuliri appears to develop an illocutive function. The analysis also highlights the synchronic coexistence of the diverse meanings constituting the semantic network of vuliri.
