The paper aims to analyze the evolution in the work of Lucio Mastronardi between the Sixties and the Seventies by examining narrative strategies and formal solutions used in short stories included in the book L'assicuratore. The publication of the collection is a turning point: the stories, written at different times, different in style and structure, marks the transition from the centrality of the object to the centrality of the subject. From the realistic and grotesque dramatization of the most ancient stories, such as the eponymous story L’assicuratore, Mastronardi turns towards the more experimental and innovative choices proposed in La ballata del vecchio calzolaio. The new language allows a deeper analysis of the character's interiority, which focuses on existential restlessness. The short stories are a sort of inventive workshop in which Lucio Mastronardi experiences new possibilities and try new ways.
