Abstract

The Role of Empathy in Emotional AlphabetisationA reflection on empathy as an educational and pedagogical category is a relatively recent phenomenon. It is, fundamentally, the experience of sharing the life of the people one encounters. It is not a spontaneous gift but a virtue whose essential features need to be formed. In this sense, empathy proves irreplaceable in terms of achieving self-knowledge, particularly in learning how to capture and express one’s own way of feeling.The emotional alphabetisation regulated by the empathic code chiefly depends on verbal intelligence to define the quality and intensity of emotional states. The author regards this special form of empathic dialogue as the co-elaboration of an autobiographical narrative text in which one’s essential desire to be (a synthesis of one’s affective life) is expressed. Reflecting on this issue leads to the evidence that self-knowledge is a gift depending on the other’s free initiative; it is also an eminently spiritual act in that it enables the most vital and deepest part of the self.
