Il dottore sul Nilo e altri racconti

Risultato della ricerca: Other report

The volume Il Dottore sul Nilo e altri racconti is a collection that includes the most significant short stories produced by Sudanese writer, Leila Aboulela, within the field of first-generation immigrant writing. The four short stories – “Coloured Lights”, “The Ostrich”, “The Museum”, and “Doctor on the Nile” – are presented in their first Italian versions and introduced by a critical investigation entitled “Traduzione culturale e scrittura arabo-anglofona
nei racconti di Leila Aboulela” (“Cultural translation and Arab-anglophone writing in Leila Aboulela’s Short Stories”), where the author (who is also the translator) tackles issues such as translation and identity, translation, gender and Islam, as well as specific topics related to homesickness, cultural translation and re-writing. The short stories, which have as protagonists female Muslim immigrant characters - with the exception of the British male protagonist in “Doctor on the Nile”, are translated and commented through an in-depth analysis which sheds light on linguistic and cultural features - specifically referring to the maintenance and reproduction of stereotypes and prejudices, the deconstruction of colonialism and its contribution to the manipulation of non-European realties, strategies and techniques of translation concerning Arabic terms in English texts, practices of foreignization against domestication as an act of resistance.
