N2 - The essay re-evaluate the historian and paleographer Giuseppe Lagumina, who worked for a long time in the “Biblioteca Comunale” of Palermo and took part in the cultural climate experienced in this city at the end of the nineteenth century, when the “Società Siciliana per la Storia Patria” was founded, the magazine “Archivio Storico Siciliano”, and the series “Documenti per servire alla Storia di Sicilia” were born. His contribution to the “Codice Diplomatico dei Giudei di Sicilia”, written together with his best known brother Bartolomeo, has been higher than previously assumed. Moreover, he was the first historian who tried to reconstruct the final acts of the Chiaromonte lordship in the city of Palermo on the basis of unpublished documents he studied and transcribed.
